Switching out of Windows S Mode

Switching out of Windows S Mode

We had an issue arise that an end user was trying to setup an RDP to the Cloud however did not have access to Remote Desktop Connection app.  After research, the tech had found that the end user's PC was in Windows S Mode.

What is Windows S Mode?

Windows 10 S Mode is a limited, locked-down Windows operating system.  In S Mode, you can only install apps from the Windows Store and can only browse the web with Microsoft Edge.

End Users that have issues connecting to our programs might be in Window S Mode.

How to check if S Mode is turned?

Go toSettings and select Systems

Go to About

On the About page, scroll down to the Windows Specifications section

How to leave S Mode

Go toSettings and select Update & Security

Select Activation and select Go to Store

Select the Get option

Click on Install

It should only take seconds to switch out of S Mode and does not require a reboot of the PC.  Once it is switched out of S Mode, the end user may start installing applications outside of the Microsoft Store.
